Elizabeth laughed as she watched Mr. Rolandâs attempts to climb the tree. âMy desire for an apple is not that great, sir.â
âBut I am certain, if I just try this route, I will successfully be able to reach ââ His broken speech was cut short as he again lost hold of the branch and slipped to the ground.
âNow, you must stop this,â Elizabeth insisted. âYou made a valiant attempt, but if you continue, your breeches will soon be so dirty, they will be beyond redemption. We should be grateful the tree is so small. Otherwise, with the number of falls you have suffered, a doctor might be required.â She again laughed. Her cheeks were shiny. It was clear she had long ago abandoned any efforts to hide her mirth.
Mr. Roland examined the tree and blushed. It was indeed a tiny thing. Hardly a tree built to climb at all. Then he lowered his eyes to his pants and sighed. âBut if I fail, my apple fetching skills will forever be questioned,â he said as he walked back toward Elizabeth, dusting off his hands, and wearing a good-natured smirk. âAnd as for my poor breeches, I am not sure they will be able to pull through, even if I discontinue my efforts now.â
âHumm, that is quite the dilemma,â Elizabeth said lifting her fisted handâone index finger fully extendedâuntil it rested against her cheek. âI am not sure how you will fare in life with your reputation as an apple fetcher in shambles. I suppose you will need to consider a profession as a jester. Your display was utterly entertaining.â
Mr. Roland now stood next to Elizabeth and offered her his arm. She took it, and the two walked back toward the road. âWell, as I have often said, the true treasures in life are good friends,â Roland said before stopping briefly and bending down to collect his hat. âI would relinquish all my skill in collecting apples to ensure I had your good opinion, Miss Bennet.â
She giggled. âIt is not so very hard to give up something you do not possess in order to secure something you must know you already hold, now is it?â
âI do enjoy spending time with you, Miss Bennett. It is a pity that I find myself in Lambton, yet we may only visit on your days off.â
Elizabeth nodded. âBut you do not know Mr. Darcy, so it would be impossible for you to call.â
âYes.â Roland briefly lowered his head to the ground before he turned back to her with excitement in his eyes. âWe could arrange for an introduction,â he said quickly. âCan you arrange for an outing into town with Mr. and Miss Darcy? If so, I could come across you there. Then, you could introduce us.â
âMiss Darcy has been asking about a jaunt into town,â Elizabeth said, almost to herself. âHer music instructor has been away and will return Thursday. She is hoping to bring both me and her brother to the music store before her next lesson to get our input on a few new pieces she has been considering.
